Success Stories

Schenley Plaza

The OTF was a full partner in the restoration of Schenley Plaza. The 10 million dollar project which began in 2005 and was completed in the Spring of 2006 transformed a parking lot into its original use, as a grand entrance to Schenley Park from Oakland. The Plaza now serves as an iconic community gathering space, including a large lawn, food kiosks, international gardens, a performance area and a carousel.

Chesterfield Road Housing Development

OTF supported the Oakland Planning and Development Corporation (OPDC) housing project on Chesterfield Road. The sixth phase of the Chesterfield Road development was completed in Fall 2005. All ten units owned by OPDC were once vacant eyesores which have been rehabilitated and sold as single-family owner occupied houses.

Boulevard of the Allies Bridge over Forbes Avenue

The OTF, working closely with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, have concluded the design of the Boulevard of the Allies Bridge replacement project at the Western portal to Oakland. The current bridge is very badly deteriorated and has carried a very strict weight limit for a number of years. In addition to the bridge replacement, new ramps will be constructed which will drastically change traffic patterns on Forbes Avenue by eliminating the counter flow traffic lane beginning at Craft and Forbes Avenues, and the construction of a slip ramp off of Fifth Avenue on to the Boulevard of the Allies. The bridge construction began in January, 2008.

Hometown Streets, Safe Routes to School

The Oakland Task Force, Oakland Transportation Management Association, Oakland Business Improvement District, University of Pittsburgh and the City of Pittsburgh have come together to apply and receive funding through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to reconstruct 11 intersections on Forbes (6) and Fifth (5) Avenues. The targeted intersections when reconstructed will improve pedestrian safety in a high traffic volume corridor. New street lighting, traffic signals, pavement improvements are the center piece of this project. Construction on these intersections will begin in 2008.
